The 2018 Toronto International Film Festival is officially in full swing, and since the kickoff last week we’ve seen nothing but incredible and inspiring new projects from filmmakers across the world. However, tonight is a special night for us. Tonight is the night our Wonderful Sam Taylor-Johnson debuts her new feature film, A Million Little Pieces, starring husband Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
A Million Little Pieces is the film adaptation based on James Frey’s memoir, centered around a writer and addict who enters painful detox at a treatment centre in Minnesota. Sam directs her husband Aaron in the lead, alongside Billy Bob Thornton, Charlie Hunnam and Odessa Young. Brad Weston’s Makeready Films financed the project and The Picture Company produced.
“I loved the way it was told,” Sam shares in an exclusive interview with Deadline. “90 miles an hour is a good way to describe the ferocity and pace of [James Frey’s] writing. I remember feeling exhausted and elated at the end, thinking it would make an amazing movie.”
And as the cherry on top, Sam and Aaron have graced the latest cover of Deadline magazine, sharing their honest journey from reading the book to getting the movie greenlit.
“I always had such a gut response to the book, and Aaron immediately felt it was a character he wanted to play,” Sam shares.
“We had to write a script, find a financier, get a cast and a green light,” Aaron added. “It was a bit fast for my liking. But, to Sam, even that pace made her impatient. She kept saying ‘I just want to make it. Let’s make it.”
